The wine industry was abuzz on Saturday, 14 November as the winners for the 2020 Veritas Wine Awards were announced. At this year’s awards 70 Double Gold and 128 Gold medals were awarded. Anthonij Rupert Wyne took home Double Gold for both the Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Cape of Good Hope Serruria Chardonnay 2018. Gold was also awarded to their L’Ormarins Brut Classique Rosé NV. These awards confirm the team’s commitment to quality, producing only the best and building an impressive track record for their wines.
Earlier this year the Serruria Chardonnay 2018 scored an impressive 93 points by leading UK Master of Wine Tim Atkin, in his 2020 South Africa Special Report. This Double Gold winner showcases subtle whiffs of orange blossom, lime zest, vanilla cream and a light biscuit note on both the nose and the palate. Flavours of rich orange cream are balanced by the zingy freshness of bright acidity and citrus zest notes while providing a supportive platform for the fruit flavours to dance elegantly and effortlessly upon, superbly integrated, nutty oak. A refined, balanced and posed wine which drinks well now but will reward patience in cellaring.
The initial intense asparagus and green pepper aromas of the Altima Sauvignon Blanc are followed by upfront passion fruit and gooseberry on the nose. The palate is rich and full of the same intense and powerful flavour, beautifully balanced by the tangy acidity which gives length and vibrancy to the succulent tropical sweetness. A lip smacking wine with a long, juicy finish.
