The 45km and 75km ultra-marathon routes of the 2023 K-Way MaxiRace Cape Winelands will once again start in Franschhoek on 30 September and take in much of the surrounding mountains, including the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve and Jonkershoek Nature Reserve before ending in Stellenbosch. Those considering taking on these gruelling routes could do worse than taking advice from SA’s King and Queen of trail running, Landie and Christiaan Greyling.

The Greylings, through their AlpasFit Coaching Academy, have put together training programmes for runners looking to push their limits and take on the 2023 K-Way MaxiRace Cape Winelands ultra-marathon routes – 45km and 75km – and a brand new 30km route for those 20km runners from last year who are looking to up their game.

“MaxiRace is such an incredible event, run over some of the most exquisite trails in the Western Cape, and we want athletes to be able to take part in it and enjoy it,” explains Landie. “Most runners only look to take on the shorter routes with self-training techniques but need some assistance in fine tuning their training for the longer routes.”

Each route specific training plan consists of a full, week-by-week breakdown of time and activities needed to complete for each workout, with set objectives to ensure you are on the right track.

“The objective of each plan is to ensure the athletes are conditioned to finish their chosen route,” says Greyling. “We want to be confident that each athlete taking on the challenge has the best experience on our routes. There is nothing worse than hating each footstep of a race because you are not fully trained for that distance, and with our route’s views, you want to be in the right headspace to enjoy every aspect of it!”

“MaxiRace Cape Winelands is fast becoming a leading brand in Trail Racing events in the Western Cape, attracting not only local Cape Town runners, but trail runners from around South Africa and the world”, says race director, Andri Stander. “Maxirace participation has more than doubled since our first year and we are certain that numbers in 2023 will continue to grow.”

More than just a trail race, the K-Way Maxirace Cape Winelands, takes runners on an adventure, and a journey of self-discovery through exquisite and unique landscapes, which include mountains, wine farms, fynbos, river crossings and famed Cape Valleys. The race offers something for every serious and aspiring trail runner, starting from 7km for those new to trail running, all the way through to 75km for the hardcore runners wishing to push their limits. Since its inaugural event in 2019, MaxiRace Cape Winelands has ensured that each community the routes traverse through, are not only involved in the race, but are able to benefit from the race in a real way.

The K-Way Maxi-Race Cape Winelands takes place on Saturday 30 September 2023 – entries for the 2023 MaxiRace Cape Winelands are open. For more info, please visit www.maxirace.co.za
