The Huguenot Memorial Museum successfully hosted the local round of Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s Annual English Speech Contest for Grade 10 and 11 learners on Thursday, 22 June 2023.

Learners from Groendal Secondary School and Franschhoek High School took part in the competition. The three top speakers will take part in the Cape Winelands District Museums’ Gala Event later this year. The top three speakers at the regional event will in turn compete against the winners of the other regions in a provincial event to be crowned as the Western Cape Provincial champions.

The top three speakers in the local round were:

  • 1st place: Shannon Fredericks of Franschhoek High School
  • 2nd place: Adrian Fisher of Groendal Secondary School
  • 3rd place: Haylah Mwila of Groendal Secondary School

The adjudicators for the event were: Mr. E. Arendse, Mrs D. Kumanov and Mrs M. Mentoor. The winners received a floating trophy to be placed in their school’s display cabinets, medals as well as various gifts. One of the museum’s trustees, Dr. Jeremy Davids (Head of the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy & Learning Centre) will also arrange coaching and mentorship for the top three speakers to assist them in their preparation for the regional gala event.
