With the Franschhoek Car Festival celebrating 75 years of Formula 1 over the 4-5 October 2025 weekend, South African Formula 1 expert Michele Lupini will have his new book, South African Champion at the show, where he will also be speaking on the book and his favourite subject on a most significant day.
“South Africa raced its own Formula 1 series from about 1960 to 1975, which also makes the Franschhoek Car Festival the 50th anniversary to the day of the final race on 4 October 1975,” Michele Lupini explains. “Ian Scheckter won but could not beat Dave Charlton to the title, but 4 October 2025 is actually an important anniversary of a most significant day in Formula 1, South African and motorsport history, and an ideal opportunity to celebrate that with a talk on the history and the book at the Festival.”
Franschhoek local and Tatler motoring editor Lupini plans two talks at the Motoring Festival public display around the Franschhoek Huguenot Monument on Saturday 4 October, and another on Sunday 5 October, when the Festival moves to the Franschhoek Motor Museum. The Tyrrell 007 that Ian Schecter won that 1975 race with against Charlton’s McLaren M23, will also be on display at the museum, albeit in the colours brother Jody raced the car in ’74.
Copies of the South African Champion book, as well as artwork from the book will be on display at the Festival, where books will also be available for sale. Learn more about the book at southafricanchampion.com.
